Notes on greenwashing

Let’s set the scene - You’re shopping online, jumping between websites, lured in by terms like “conscious” “sustainable” “eco” “responsible”... But what does it actually mean? Most of the time, not much.

Here’s how to see through the bullshit and be sure your money is ending up in the right pockets.

  1. Look for evidence - If a brand uses the term “conscious”, dig deeper. Have they provided hard data or statistics that support their claim of being environmentally friendly, or are they just leaning on empty buzzwords?

  2. Always seek verification - Has the brand’s claim to sustainability been verified elsewhere? Always look beyond the brand’s own channels to authenticate claims.

  3. Think beyond the natural environment - Consumers often overlook the fact that there are three pillars to sustainability: environmental, social and economic. Being a sustainable brand is so much more than making environmental commitments.

  4. Take action - Now that you know how to spot greenwashing, take action and support brands that are truly committed to sustainability. By doing so, you're not only making a positive impact on the environment but also supporting ethical business practices. Together, we can make a difference.

Here are some red flags to take note of:

  • There are buzzwords everywhere, but there's no web page dedicated to sustainable commitments.

  • The price is unusually cheap: someone or something is paying the real price.

  • You can't find any information elsewhere about the brand's sustainability commitments.
